Previously, I had a lot of posts on common SSL certificates and the way to install them on cPanel, Apache or NGINX. However, I haven’t had a chance to write a full article about a type of certificate that many people desire, which makes the browser show the business name right next to the website address’s HTTPS supported protocol, like this:
This certificate is called EV SSL (Extended Validation SSL). This is an enterprise SSL certificate, which I do not specialize in this, so since I owned a business WilliamReview then I have an opportunity to experience through and document this article.
How difficult is it to register an EV SSL Certificate, how I registered for it, how long it will be granted and how long it takes? I will say all again in this article that I think anyone can do, with a little bit of the cost.
What is EV SSL Certificate and is it more secure?
Extended Validation SSL Certificate is the most advanced type of certificate for business entities or organizations that are licensed to operate. This means EV SSL cannot be granted to individuals or any other entity not licensed by the local authority.
Basically, EV SSL is not as secure as other SSL certificates, such as DV (Domain Validated), OV (Organization Validated), because all SSL certificates support up to 256-bit encryption and lock the length of 2048 or more. However, EV SSL has some differences without any certificates as well:
- Increasing the prestige of your website due to the careful authentication process.
- Guarantee fees are higher than other types of certificates. For example, Comodo is $ 1,750,000 and GeoTrust is $ 1,500,000. For normal certifications, it ranges from $ 10,000 to $ 500,000.
Therefore, you should specify that EV SSL is not better or more secure than other SSL certificates that have more formal value.
Steps to obtain EV SSL Certificate for your business
1.Buy EV SSL Certificate
The first step is to buy a valid EV SSL certificate anywhere and a CA (Comodo Authority) such as Comodo, Symantec, Geotrust, etc. I encourage Comodo for you to choose a proper price. You can buy at Namecheap if you want to make an international payment.
Note that when purchasing EV SSL, you will have an order ID code at Comodo and you use it to communicate with Comodo for authentication.
2. Create CSR and Private Key
The next step is to create a CSR for this SSL certificate and a private key for that CSR. Note that you must keep the CSR and Private Keys files for later use once the certificate is available.
You can see how to generate CSR code on cPanel or create CSR code on VPS / Linux server.
3. Send authentication
After having the CSR code and activating the EV SSL certificate, you will arrive at the tiring step that is the authentication. For other CAs I do not know but with Comodo, the authentication process is as follows:
Your business may not have enough information on Duns and Bradstreet (D & B) or a Duns Number. So if your business already has a Duns Number, it’s very convenient because it does not have to be as cumbersome as the bottom. Comodo just needs to verify business information on D & B.
Fill company information and authenticated phone recipient information from Comodo, there will be 2 copies are EV SSL Certificate Subscriber Agreement and EV SSL Request Form. Print out and sign the full name.
Next, Comodo will contact the caller with the confirmed caller who completed the above step in about 4-5 hours after sending. If no one calls then go to chat with them to call them immediately. My case was that the caller had already been called before, but then they asked me to send the two documents in the above step again and called, if there was no caller then ask them to call right away, and they did.
When they call you, they will ask for the company name, business domain, website address and confirm that you are applying for an SSL certificate from Comodo CA. You confirm with them if it is okay, a call just takes about 2 minutes.
After the call is done, approximately 8 hours later you will receive an EV SSL Certificate as this email is completed.
Once you have the SSL certificate file, you can now install it as another SSL certificate, you can refer to how to install the SSL certificate that I wrote:
- Install SSL Certificate on cPanel
- Install SSL certificate on NGINX
- Install SSL certificate in Apache
- Install SSL certificate on VestaCP (Instead of using the Let’s Encrypt certificate, you copy the Comodo certificate code)
So that’s it, now your website has a green SSL certificate with the company’s name in the address bar. The above is what you did to register the SSL certificate for your company and I think you can also succeed in the same way.
